Polyaluminum chloride is a commonly used water treatment agent. Given the low technological barriers to production in the market and the wide variation in product quality, how can you choose an efficient PAC? First, we should understand our own needs and usage requirements, and then make our selection based on the specific characteristics of the products. This way, we can purchase an efficient and suitable water treatment agent.

The appearance can be categorized into brown, khaki, yellow, pale yellow, and white. Brown polyaluminum chloride is classified as industrial grade; khaki polyaluminum chloride is classified as both industrial and drinking-water grade; while yellow and white products are classified as food-grade. Prices have risen again. It’s important to note that color is assessed from an overall perspective rather than from the perspective of packaging.
Alkalinity is the fundamental component responsible for the morphological changes in polyaluminum chloride, and it refers to hydroxyl (OH) radical ions. The indicator used to measure OH ions in polyaluminum chloride is alkalinity, typically defined as the percentage of OH and Al in the polyaluminum chloride—usually ranging from 40% to 90%. When alkalinity is low, the coagulation effect is poor. It should be noted that the alkalinity of polyaluminum chloride intended for beverage applications is controlled at 50%, while that for industrial use is controlled at 80%.
The water-insoluble substances in PAC are also referred to as solubility. The general solubility of the product is greater than 99%, meaning that the water-insoluble fraction accounts for approximately 1%. For drinking-grade products, the solubility exceeds 99.8%, indicating that the insoluble fraction is less than 0.2%. This method offers four different production approaches, each with varying levels of polyaluminum chloride content. The products include standard industrial grade, plate-and-frame filter press grade, industrial-grade plate-and-frame filter press grade, drinking-water grade, and spray-dried grade.
Is there any difference between polyaluminum chlorides of different colors?
White polyaluminum chloride:
White polyaluminum chloride is one of the commonly used water-purification materials. It is professionally applied in a wide range of industries, including food processing, drinking water treatment, municipal water supply, precision manufacturing, water purification, papermaking, pharmaceuticals, sugar refining, cosmetic additives, and daily chemical products. It boasts high purity and comes at a relatively high price.
Pale yellow polyaluminum chloride:
The mid-to-high-end product series, second only to white polyaluminum chloride, is primarily used for drinking water treatment, with strict limits on heavy-metal content. In particular, our drinking-water-grade polyaluminum chloride products feature crystal-clear water quality, no sediment formation, an Al2O3 content of approximately 30 (±0.5), fine powder particles, uniform particle size distribution, excellent flocculation performance, high purification efficiency and stability, low dosage requirements, and low costs—making them the preferred coagulant for large-scale water treatment plants with whom we have long-term cooperative relationships.
Golden-yellow polyaluminum chloride:
Polyaluminum chloride is currently widely used in the market. It is a highly effective wastewater treatment flocculant with excellent coagulation performance. Therefore, it is an excellent choice for industrial water supply, industrial wastewater treatment, industrial water recycling, and urban wastewater treatment.
Brown, brown, coffee-colored polyaluminum chloride:
This water treatment product is manufactured to meet the specific requirements of individual customers for water treatment. It has a higher iron content than other polyaluminum chloride product series, resulting in a darker golden-yellow color. It is suitable for treating wastewater with low temperatures, low turbidity, and high algae levels. It is primarily used for purifying drinking water, municipal water supplies, and industrial water.
